Today’s Topic: You can’t spell Jeff Bennett without “effen”
Mood Music: Walk by Pantera
I played high school baseball on a team that had some pretty good pitchers….hell even great. They had great fastballs, a few had incredible curve balls, some were even downright intimidating to face. You wanna know one thing though, that they all had in common?
Walks. Holy effin’ shit. I must admit….one of the worst things to experience as a fielder during a baseball game….is a pitcher that can’t find the damn strike zone.
Guys….I know it can be mental….but we’re not asking for much….just let them HIT the ball. You don’t have to strike everyone out….a home run is better than watching you nitpick the effin’ pitcher until he gets a free base.
So we come to the man that’s the subject of today’s blog. Jeff “effen” Bennett. A relief pitcher for the Atlanta Braves.
Damn that’s a familiar sight…sorry, where was I….
Why, you ask, would I devote a whole blog to writing about a guy that most of you have never heard of? It’s easy…I’m a die-hard Braves fan, but it’s becoming harder and harder to spend 3 plus hours watching a team that rations runs like the last embers of a dying fire only to have guys like Jeff “effen” Bennett walk the leadoff hitter in the top of the 11th inning against the Cubs. Guess what happens when you walk the leadoff hitter late in a game? That’s right….the same thing that happens when you walk the pitcher or walk a guy with 2 outs late in the game…….he’s gonna score…almost every time (and if you’re Jeff Bennett…well let’s just say I’ve never watched him walk a guy in a situation like that, that didn’t score).
My motto…..JUST THROW STRIKES. SHIT. You are getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to pitch maybe 4 or 5 innings a week. Throw strikes.
So why single out Bennett? Wait, let’s look at another picture….
That’s why. This is the look that I see every time I decide to spend my night watching the Braves. This idiot walking a guy that’s got a .100 batting average with nobody on base in the 1oth inning. I’m just over it to say the least. A professional baseball team WILL NOT WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP with pitchers like Bennett in the bullpen. Period.
Like a great man once said to my siblings…..”the Braves won’t win” he said. And when asked why….his answer, “cause the Braves ain’t got no bullpen”
You’re damn right.
I mean think about it….if your job was to go out and fix peoples’ cars….and the easiest part of that was changing a tire….yet every other time you did it…..halfway out of the station, the damn tire flew off as the customer was driving away. You wouldn’t have a job very long…would you?
So….let’s see another…..
Well……at least in Spring Training he was giving it the ole’ heroes’ effort. Of course, in a REAL game, Jeff, you can’t throw it underhanded to get it over the plate. Sorry…..and Bobby Cox, you ARE a Hall-of-Fame Manager, but here’s a very minor piece of advice (that I feel qualified to give after watching the Braves for over 25 years of my life)….fire Terry Pendleton (he sucks as a hitting coach…seriously, who has actually improved under Pendleton?)….fire Roger McDowell (he sucks as a pitching coach….it just hasn’t been the same since Mazzone left…hmmmm)….
and for God’s sake…..if a jackass like Jeff Bennett can’t throw strikes…or even worse…walks the leadoff guy in an inning of relief, walks a guy with 2 outs, or heaven forbid…walks the opposing pitcher……send his ass the eff’ down to the minors and let someone pitch (and make a living) that will throw effen’ strikes.
And Jeff, don’t worry man….I’m sure you’ll be forgotten long before the Braves turn this thing around….but don’t feel bad….you can hide your face in another town before too long (if Cox comes to his senses…which isn’t likely at this point I’m afraid)
Go Braves!!!
I’ll talk at you all again later.
“is there no standard anymore…?…..RESPECT, WALK”

Hopefully the Braves are making some moves to help shore up that bullpen. Medlin will be moved out there once Hanson takes over as the 5th starter.
Like everyone else, I was shoked to hear the news about Glavine. For 6 weeks now we’ve been hearing about his progress and desire to get back on the mound in June. I wish him all the best.
And yes Pendelton has to go, but I’m willing to give McDowell a little more time.

I just can’t really understand Effen Bennett. I mean sometimes he throws great stuff and is unhittable, but he can turn it around the next night and look like complete dog crap. Every time they bring him into the game, I can’t watch for fear of bullpen implosion.
I really believe the bullpen has some talent, but there is just no consistency. I am not completely unrealistic in thinking that they should or will never give up a run, but it’s just the fashion that they do it. When the bullpen blows a lead, it’s slow a painful event. They walk a guy, then give up a single, then strike two guys out, then walk a guy, then give up a hit. It’s just hard to watch.
You really can’t trust much of the bullpen. Will, I know you don’t like him, but I think Mike Gonzalez is a pretty solid guy. Not great, but solid. He gives up some hits, but he is not scared to attack the hitters. I think Soriano has been a stud this year, and Moylan might be starting to turn it around. He looked real shaky in the beginning of the season, but is starting to throw well. The other guy, who I just haven’t seen enough of is Eric O’Flarety (sp?). From what I’ve seen he has thrown pretty well. Plus, he hasn’t walked a lot of guys. I just don’t have a big enough sample size to have feelings for him either way.
Outside of those four guys, the bullpen is a cluster. Manny Acosta is back, but if I remember correctly from last year, he has good stuff, throws hard, but has a tendency to walk guys (a la Jeff Bennett). Buddy Carlyle hasn’t done squat this year. They just put Jorge Campillo on the DL. We’ve seen James Parr and he’s been okay (despite the grand slam to Todd Helton). The Jo-Jo Reyes bullpen experience hasn’t really started due to his pulled hamstring, but I think I speak for us all when I say, let’s hope he can find a niche elsewhere.
I’m going to say if a starter can get through 7 innings with a lead, I feel fairly certain the bullpen can hold them. This is due to the fact that they usually pitch Soriano or Moylan in the 8th and then Gonzalez in the 9th. If a bullpen has to pitch the 7th, 8th, and 9th. All bets are off because we will probably see either Bennett or Acosta, and who knows what kind of outing you will get from them.

I just can’t figure out what I think of this Braves team. I hate that Schaffer didn’t work out, but he was probably put in the show a little too early anyhow. Plus, I love the move to get Nate McLouth, that should be a big help.
As for the bullpen, I’m with Brien. I mean, I know there is some talent out there. And I know it is unrealistic to expect the pen to never give up a run or lose a lead. But as Brien said, sometimes the way ours does it is painful to watch. I’d rather see the other team hit a walk off homerun then to see us give up a lead off walk, strike out the next two, and then give up another walk and a bloop single to lose the game.

I think ya’ll should probably just give up watching the Braves/looking up scores on your phones/analyzing each game. Maybe next year will be better…

First off, to address your point Will about Bennett and the walks/falling behind hitters, it’s not just him, it’s pitchers at every level. There’s nothing that pisses me off more than a reliever who comes into a game, especially with a 2-run lead or more, and starts falling behind hitters. But starters aren’t much better, they just think it’s okay to do since they’re only expected to go 5 innings and/or 100 pitches (whichever comes first).
The Braves are hard to watch on a nightly basis. They either all hit, or none of them hit. They do next to nothing offensively after the 7th inning and they don’t seem to step in the box with any kind of plan (save Chipper and McCann). The bullpen has actually been pretty good, but I have a hard time watching Gonzales with his rocking back and forth. I actually like when he gives up a walk or a hit so he has to pitch from the stretch.
